Environment and biodiversity
We are committed to mitigating our impact on ecosystems, protecting the natural environment and contributing to the preservation of biodiversity.
Ecosystem and biodiversity management is an important topic for our Group.For this reason, we intend to create an integrated model for the assessment, management and monitoring of the impacts of our activities on ecosystems by 2024.
Approximately 95% of the km of our network is installed in an urban or road context. We are not an extractive company and do not produce basic materials. However, we are committed to assessing environmental protection issues and to responsibly managing our impacts, with initiatives to:
- pursue the protection and care of the natural environment
- avoid deforestation
- ensure the restoration and maintain the balance of the ecosystem and biodiversity
- pursue the sustainable management of natural resources and the efficient use of energy.
As a gas distribution service concessionaire, we operate following the instructions of the Municipalities. In particular, in activities involving excavations, we respect specific environmental requirements and carry out work to restore the previous ecological situation.
In Greece, we contribute to the preservation of local biodiversity through projects to restore and develop natural parks within urban areas: in 2023, 10 green spaces were redeveloped in the urban areas of Thessaloniki, Larissa and Karditsa.
Reclamation and environmental redevelopment
The sites subject to reclamation are in general the former gas workshops, where in the past industrial activities such as the distillation of coal gas, cracking or reforming of light oil derivatives for the production of city gas were carried out.
Italgas manages the design, safety, characterisation, monitoring, remediation and environmental restoration activities on affected sites, in accordance with national environmental legislation for the remediation of polluted sites.

Click to be green
In 2022 we launched Click To Be Green, an initiative dedicated to protecting the environment.
In collaboration with sales companies, we are creating areas of Urban Public Green, planting trees based on the CO2 savings generated by ClickToGas services. An Eco Counter on our website and on the portals dedicated to sales companies (GaS2Be) and end customers (MyItalgas) monitors the environmental benefits deriving from digital services. Urban public green projects generate a positive effect for the environment, mitigating heat islands and promoting biodiversity through the planting of trees and essences.
