Scenario and context in which we operate
The context continues to be strongly influenced by the effects of the war in Ukraine.
Through the REPowerEU plan, the EU has charted a course to achieve key objectives: diversifying energy sources, enhancing energy security, decarbonizing consumption, and boosting the economic competitiveness of businesses, with a focus on renewable gases (biomethane and hydrogen) and energy efficiency.
By 2030, biomethane and hydrogen are expected to replace approximately 50% of Russia’s share of natural gas imports in the EU—around 70 bcm of the 155 bcm imported in 2021. Achieving this target places gas DSOs at the forefront of ensuring the Union’s energy security. Their role includes developing digital, intelligent, and flexible networks within their countries to boost gas production, facilitate direct connections, and enable widespread adoption.
Our strategic vision underscores our dedication to strengthening the gas distribution sector in Italy, focusing on maximizing synergies to provide substantial advantages for households and businesses. We are committed to advancing the energy transition while safeguarding supply security and promoting sustainable energy costs, creating value for both individuals and enterprises.
Digital transformation is central to improving our operations, including water and energy efficiency. Backed by €750 million in planned investments under the Strategic Plan 2024–2030, we aim to strengthen our leadership in water management and expand our role in energy efficiency to support the energy transition.
The Strategic Plan 2024–2030 marks a milestone in Italgas' history, positioning it as the European champion in gas distribution while deepening its commitment to digitalizing infrastructure for the benefit of the entire country
