Emissions reduction
To contribute to the fight against climate change, we work to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, both at Group level and in our value chain. We are also active through the ESCo Geoside in the field of energy efficiency.
Thanks to the digitization of the network, technological innovations and energy efficiency interventions, we are working to reduce our energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
The main greenhouse gas emissions of our Group derive from the fugitive emissions of natural gas from the distribution networks, from the processes for the preheating of carrierized gas in decompression plants at city gates and from the use of the company’s fleet cars.
Our emission reduction targets, both at Group level (Scope 1 and 2) and in the supply chain (Scope 3) are aligned with both the EU targets for 2030 and the goal of achieving “Net Zero Carbon” by 2050. With regard specifically to Scope 3 emissions, related to the supply chain, we are intensifying the engagement, partnership and training initiatives of our suppliers, and we have included reward criteria in the tenders.
Our targets are also aligned with a 1.5°C pathway scenario, as confirmed by the analysis conducted by an independent consultancy firm (Carbonsink, from the South Pole group) specialising in climate scenario analysis.
In addition to our Group’s internal actions, we strengthen our active role in the fight against climate change by strengthening the activities of our ESCo, Geoside.

Picarro technology, to reduce fugitive methane emissions
We are strongly committed to minimizing fugitive methane emissions. For this reason we introduced the Picarro Surveyor, a sophisticated detection technology, which offers important advantages in terms of speed of action, sensitivity in detection and inspectable areas.
With this tool, we are able to locate, classify and quantify both the most significant and the smallest sources of gas emissions. We can also quantify the expected benefits of maintenance initiatives, and therefore prioritize interventions.
This technology is operational on 100% of the Italian network managed by Italgas, and has also been implemented in Greece.
Geoside, our ESCo
Geoside, our ESCo (Energy Service Company), specialises in energy efficiency interventions for public and private customers, in the residential and industrial sectors.
EPC contracts – Energy Performance Contracts – provide that the savings generated as a result of interventions are guaranteed and measured. EPCs mainly concern:
- air conditioning systems (powered by methane gas)
- public lighting systems (powered by electricity)
PV system implementation
Our target is to reach 280,000 MWh saved by Geoside customers, corresponding to about 62,000 tons of CO2, thanks to interventions carried out between 2022 and 2028.
