Our Role

We are the first operator in Italy and Greece in gas distribution, and the third in Europe. In over 185 years of history we have brought gas to Italians’ homes, factories, offices and wherever it is required, contributing to the economic and social development of the country.

Today we put our experience and our ability to innovate at the service of the ecological transition. Gas networks, in fact, are vital to ensure gas availability, energy security and cost sustainability for citizens and businesses. With the significant investments envisaged by the 2023-2029 Business Plan, we will continue to develop our assets by increasing their level of digitisation, a crucial factor in enabling the distribution of renewable gases – today biomethane, tomorrow synthetic methane, in the near future hydrogen – and in reducing our carbon footprint. Only a fully digitized network, therefore intelligent and flexible, will be able to effectively manage the simultaneous presence of different types of gas on the network.

In addition, with the acquisition of Depa Infrastructure, today Enaon, which took place in September 2022, we are implementing a major development of the gas distribution network in Greece.

We leverage our distinctive skills to develop new business opportunities in energy efficiency solutions, water services – where we have established ourselves as a reference player in Italy – and information technology.

The 2023-2029 Strategic Plan envisages, in fact, an increase in investments both for the digital transformation of assets and to strengthen the presence in the energy efficiency sector. Our goal is to play a leading role in the energy transition path towards the decarbonization of the economy and consumption, and for the achievement of the European Union’s climate goals.

Our purpose engages all our people, permeates our processes to create quoted value with all stakeholders and guides our vision of the future.

We talk about energy, in the plural, because the energy mix of the future will not only be linked to fossil gas: renewable gases, such as biomethane and, in the longer term, hydrogen and synthetic methane, will play an increasingly important role in the transition as will energy efficiency solutions. For us, innovation is not an end in itself: it is necessary to fight against climate change, guarantee a quality, safe and reliable service to our customers, develop the skills of our people, and spread knowledge in the area.
